Legacy

Lala Fakir Chand laid the foundation in 1822 & started his business under the name and style of M/s Fakir Chand Raghunath Dass. Located in the vicinity of the great mosque Jama Masjid, this later came to be known as Ivory Mart.

Kursi Nashin’ in 1905

Following his demise, his son Lala Raghunath Dass took over the reigns of the organization. A very hardworking & dynamic personality, he was awarded the title of ‘Kursi Nashin’ in 1905. A ‘Kursi’ is a high chair upon which a ruler is seated. It depicts supremacy, regalty & greatness. This title ‘Kursi Nashin’ signifies that he was first offered a seat (kursi) as a mark of respect , when he went to visit any officer or gentleman.

Later his son Lala Manohar Lal ji carried forward the legacy & took it to new heights. He extended the tradition of high standards & excellent service. In the year 1942, his son Suraj Pershad took over & enriched this legacy by introducing many more arts & crafts from all across the country.

Later, Shri Satya Prakash took charge of Ivory Mart & took it to new heights. He carried the ivory tradition further & also diversified into fine jewelry ranging from 24kt to Mughal Jewelry & from 22 Kt to precious Diamond Jewelry. Ashutosh joined his father & created a new revolution in the jewelry industry. He introduced more trendy jewelry for the young & famous.

The Journey

This family were pioneers in Ivory carvings & boast of very intricate & fine carvings. They were fondly known as Dibbi Wallas (Pill boxes ivory) & later on became famous as Khilonewala and Ivory Merchants.

They opened their first store in the Jama Masjid in 1822. More than a century later, in 1940, they opened another store in the Connaught Place the downtown hub of the Capital. This became the favorite stop for all global leaders and connoisseurs of ivory & jewelry.

In the year 1966, they established the Indian Handicrafts Emporium, one of the finest emporiums in the Country. Located near the majestic Qutub Minar, it was inaugurated by the President of India, His Excellency Dr. Zakir Hussain. This emporium housed the most unusual and exquisite pieces of art, crafts & fine jewelry. Till date, they have retained their traditional grandeur and provide a vast range of tastefully displayed artifacts.

With passage of time, the legacy expanded by leaps & bounds. Their presence was established everywhere. They owned shops in leading hotels & played host to numerous celebrities & dignitaries in India & all across the world.
